A different kind of dictionary, the Visual Dictionary is perfect…
“when you know what something looks like but not what it’s called, or when you know the word but can’t picture the object, The Visual Dictionary has the answer. In a quick look, you can match the word to the image.”
There are also audio files of the pronunciation of words. First published in print (in multiple languages), the Dictionary is now available online. Well worth a look.
Here are the items newly arrived at the USF Polytechnic Library during the month of March. As always, new circulating books are found in the “New books” stacks in the Group Study area; the new reference titles are being immediately shelved in their respective stacks.

Governor Charlie Crist has proclaimed April 2009 as Library Appreciation Month. You will find below the text of the proclamation.
WHEREAS, libraries are a cornerstone of Florida’s educational system, providing programs for children, families, adults, and elders to enrich their understanding of the world; and
WHEREAS, libraries provide residents of Florida with access to important information about health, economics, the environment, and countless other subjects, improving living conditions and allowing Floridians to live more productive and fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS, libraries support a competitive workforce with basic literacy programs, computers and other resources, helping people find, evaluate, and use information they need for their jobs, health, and recreation; and
WHEREAS, the expansion of electronic networks linking libraries and their resources gives library users easier access to information;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Charlie Crist, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and well wishes to all observing April 2009 as Library Appreciation Month.
The USF Polytechnic Library and its staff works hard to achieve its mission, which is to provide access to information resources and assistance in using those information resources in order to support study, research and teaching. We appreciate your support!
The USFP Library has published a new online tutorial on boolean logic and boolean searching. It’s a short introduction (3m42s) on the three basic boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and how they work together.
Check out our other online tutorials on the Library’s website, under “Research Help”.
Access to Wiley InterScience will be intermittently disrupted Saturday, March 28, from 8:00 AM to approximatively 12:00 PM. The full site will not go offline, but may experience minor disruptions where items such as the search or customer service interfaces will be unavailable for periods of about 30-40 minutes. The downtime is due to essential site maintenance.
A gentle reminder about some policies in effect at the Library and Open Use Computer Lab.
- All minors under 16 are to be accompanied by an adult.
- The USF Poly Computer Usage and Security Policies prohibit a user from logging someone else on a computer with their personal logon ID.
- Concerning the public open access computers, priority is given to academic/research purposes. Please limit your time to 30 minutes if others are waiting.
- Finally, we would like to remind you that food and open drink containers are not permitted.
We appreciate your cooperation and your courtesy towards others, thank you!

Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th, work on the covered walkway will necessitate workers to be active in the north-east corner of the Open Use Computer Lab. Some noise and disruption are possible intermittently.
Some of the workstations are not accessible. The printers have been moved closer to the front desk. Printing is still available.
We remind you that there are some workstations at the back of the room. It should also be quieter in that area. We apologize for the disruption.
