Starting Tuesday July 5th, the Library and Open Use Lab will be open from 8AM to 8PM, Monday through Thursday. We will be closing earlier on those days.
This adjustment comes upon changing spending priorities for SGA in the new fiscal year (SGA was financing the extended hours after 8PM) and usage statistics. Extended hours may return for the mid-term and final exams periods.
The opening hours for the rest of the week remains unchanged:
Friday: 8:00AM to 5:00PM
Saturday: 9AM to 3PM
Sunday: closed

The National Academies – National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council -starting June 2nd 2011, permit the free download of PDFs of reports that are currently for sale on the National Academies Press (NAP) website. PDFs associated with future reports (except for those in the “Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals” series) will also be offered free of charge to all Web visitors.
That’s more than 4,000 reports to date on a range of scientific topics.
If you’re looking for children’s books in multiple languages, the International Children’s Digital Library will provide with numerous options, all in full-text and for free. There are multiple search parameters, including age range, genre, language, length and even cover colors.
The International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) is a research project funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and Microsoft Research to create a digital library of outstanding children’s books from all over the world. The project was introduced at an international celebration at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. in November 2002. The collection’s focus is on identifying materials that help children to understand the world around them and the global society in which they live. The materials in the collection, all presented in the original languages in which they were published, reflect similarities and differences in cultures, societies, interests, and lifestyles of peoples around the world. At the end of the initial research period, it is anticipated that the ICDL collection will include approximately 10,000 materials in at least 100 languages.

On Monday, May 30th, the Library and Open Use Lab will be closed to observe Memorial Day.
Here are the Library and Open Use Computer Lab hours, starting June 16.
Monday to Thursday: 8:00AM to 9:30PM
Friday: 8:00AM to 5:00PM
Saturday: 9AM to 3PM
Sunday: closed
These hours are effective until June 30th, 2011. SGA is again financing extended hours this May and June (thank you!). As SGA prepares its budget for the coming financial year, we’ll see if there will be funds available (and usage of the facilities) to continue with extended hours for June and July months and the Fall semester.
To facilitate linking to full-text resources, the USF Libraries have moved to a simplified version of the “Find it @USF” screen (aka SFX screen) on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. This is the screen that permits to open the full-text of a journal article, for example, from one of our article databases.
This change is based on user feedback. We hope that you will find this new version helpful in conducting your research.
Changes include:
• Less clutter
• Larger font that is easier to read
• Removing the citation boxes
• Replacing the GO button with links
• Icons for the type of resources
