New resources at the USF Poly and FIPR Institute libraries

Here are the latest arrivals for the month of January. As always, Polytechnic titles are located in the New Books shelves in the back of the room. Reference and DVDs are shelved immediately in their proper stacks. All FIPR materials are shelved immediately in their proper stacks as well (although there are no new titles this month.) The books from the circulating collections of both libraries can be requested using the interlibrary loan system.

To note, we now have copies of two faculty publications by Drs. Richard Marshall and James Payne. They are located in the USFP Faculty Publications Special Collection, in the Group Study area. Dr. Lisa Jo Elliot has chapters published in Introduction to unmanned aircraft systems in the regular collection.

Also, we are starting to receive this year’s award-winning and runner-up children’s books. You’ll notice as well titles related to specific topics in education like diversity and STEM.

New Library newsletter: Faculty Research Review

We are publishing this week the first issue of a new Library publication, the Faculty Research Review.

This publication, prepared by Business Librarian Lisa Zilinski, extensively lists USF Polytechnic faculty’s scholarly works – books, book chapters, journal articles and proceedings – produced in 2011. Zilinski used a variety of sources to identify the publications, including vitas, library databases and web searches.

When available, links to the library catalog or to the full-text content were included. If you’re off-campus, don’t forget to log in first into the USF VPN or the “USF Libraries” tab in Blackboard.

Here are some notes on how publications were selected:

  • Books are authored, co-authored, edited or co-edited by a USFP faculty member
  • Selected articles are from peer-reviewed journals
  • Selected proceedings are from peer-reviewed and published conference proceedings. Some of the peer-reviewed proceedings have not yet been published, but have been included

We plan to produce this publication bi-annually.

Wikipedia blackout tomorrow

Wikipedia is going offline for 24 hours – starting at 12:00 a.m. Eastern on January 18th.

Why? And, importantly, what can you do if you need to do research?

Why is Wikipedia going offline? In a statement released January 16, 2012, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director, Sue Gardner explained, “The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.”

We know Wikipedia is a quick source to look up facts. However, the Library has many other authoritative sources for factual and reference information. You can access them from campus or from home.

  • Encyclopedia Britannica
Includes the complete, renowned, encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year. You can also use EB Online to search an Internet directory that includes more than 130,000 links to Web sites selected, rated, and reviewed by Britannica editors.
  • CQ Researcher
CQ Researcher covers the most current and controversial issues of the day with summaries, pros and cons, bibliographies and more.
  • Credo Reference
This database provides access to 100 reference resources that allows you to search across all content.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library
Search some of the most used reference sources in this database. Titles cover political science, law, education, nursing, social sciences, publishing, zoology, history, and religion.

Never limit yourself to one source for your information and explore all the resources the Library offers you. And remember, we are here to help!
