“Stuff the Bus”: school supplies drive

The USF Lakeland community is invited to participate in “Stuff the Bus” with the Kiwanis Clubs of Lakeland. The purpose is to collect school supplies for kids in need. The items needed are pencils, pens, scissors, paper towels, Kleenex, folders, paper, glue sticks, liquid soap, Ziploc bags, crayons, notebooks, erasers, plastic pencil boxes or bags.

We hope to fill several baskets. Starting Monday, July 10th, the baskets will be located in LAC mail area, LLC mail area and LMA mail area. Please bring in your items by Friday, July 21st. For more information, contact Nancy Webb (667-7722 or nwebb at lakeland.usf.edu). Thank you!

    What I intended to ask in my earlier posting is how long have you been doing Stuff the Bus, and where did you come up with the idea.

    I think it is a wonderful way to help our neediest citizens.

    I’m only the relayer on the information. I simply wanted the message to get across more widely. But I am not involved in the project itself. Being relatively recent to USF-Lakeland, I don’t know if it’s the first year collection baskets are on campus. But I know there are similar “Stuff the Bus” campaigns across the country – it is a good idea!

    We began Operation Stuff the Bus in Marion County in 2002 and have conducted a drive each July using a real school bus and driver. Last year we took in over $67,000 in new school supplies and monetary donations. The total after four years is over $135,000.

    Our drive is conducted by the Military Officers Association, Kingdom of the Sun Chapter. I started Operation Stuff the Bus here, and have chaired it since the beginning. Several of our contigious counties have begun similar drives. We have over
