New resources at the USFP Library

Here are the latest arrivals for the month of April. Yes! It’s a long list of exciting new books! As always, circulating books (including children’s) are located in the New Books shelves in the back of the room. A/V and Reference are shelved immediately in their proper stacks.

To note, we’ve started receiving the 2010 award-winning, honor and notable Children’s books, including the Caldecott – The Lion & the Mouse PZ8.2.P456 Li 2009, and the Coretta Scott King - Bad news for outlaws : the remarkable life of Bass Reeves, deputy U.S. marshal F697.R44 N45 2009.

As well, we’ve started receiving books for a small collection focused on innovation.

E-resource Update: Springer Ebooks

While this has been an ongoing development over the past three years for the USF Libraries with a preliminary purchase of three Springer e-book collections and the monographic series, here is a summary and update on the Springer E-Book Collections.

Springer E-book Collections acquired for 2010:

  • Architecture, Design and Arts
  • Behavioral Sciences
  • Biomedical & Life Sciences
  • Business & Economics
  • Chemistry & Material Science
  • Computer Science
  • Earth & Environmental Science
  • Engineering
  • Humanities, Social Science & Law
  • Mathematics & Statistics
  • Physics & Astronomy
  • Professional and Applied Computing

These collections represent all Springer e-book collections, with the exception of Medicine, a collection that will soon be acquired by the USF Health Sciences Library. The e-book collections include the monographic series such as the Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Mathematics, etc.

In addition to the 2009 and 2010 collection for these collections, the backfile covering 2005-2009 for all collections with the exception of Medicine was acquired.

Purchasing the collection provides us with ownership/rights to about 15,000 titles, not including the medical titles. There are no restrictions on number of users in a Springer e-book, i.e. unlimited simultaneous users. There are no restrictions on printing. The e-books are integrated with all Springer content: journals and eReference Works. The e-books are listed individually in the library catalog so discovery can occur at the title/author/subject level. Collections are in MetaLib. MyCopy is active for over 11,000 Springer ebooks published since 2005. This allows our authorized users to purchase a print edition of the ebook acquired by the USF Libraries, including shipping and handling for $24.95. Books are printed in black and white with a color soft cover.

The e-books collections include books published under the Springer imprint and the following imprints:

  • Birkhauser
  • Copernicus Books
  • Humana Press
  • Physica-Verlag
  • Plenum US
  • Praxis
  • Springer-Verlag
  • Steinkopff
  • TELOS

  • Educate the public about how robotics technology impacts society, both now and in the future
  • Advocate for increased funding for robotics technology research and development
  • Inspire students of all ages to pursue careers in robotics and other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-related fields

Celebrate all your libraries, it’s National Library Week

This week, April 11 to the 17, is National Library Week.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the United States of America each year.

This year’s Honorary Chair is Neil Gaiman. He’s the author of, among others, The Graveyard Book (2009 Newbery Award, USF Poly Children’s Books PZ7.G1273 Gr 2008); Coraline (USF Poly Children’s Books PZ7.G1273 Co 2002 – novel and PZ7.7.R8774 Co 2008 – graphic novel) and The Wolves in the Wall (USF Poly Children’s Books PZ7.G1273 Wo 2003).

Trial databases: SpringerImages and SpringerMaterials: the Landolt-Börnstein Bornstein Database

The USF Libraries are currently offering two databases on trial. Both databases are of particular interest to USF Polytechnic. I will be happy to receive your comments.

SpringerImages is a growing collection of scientific images that spans the scientific, technical and medical fields, including high-quality clinical images from images.MD. The continually updated collection – currently over 1.5 million images – gathers photos, graphs, histograms, figures, and tables, and is available via a searchable online database. The SpringerImages interface enables users to search more broadly and more accurately, through captions, keywords, context and more, and then link from the image to the source article. Users can create personalized image sets, and can export images for use in presentations or lectures.

SpringerMaterials: The Landolt-Börnstein Database is based on the Landolt-Börnstein New Series, the unique, fully evaluated data collection in all areas of physical sciences and engineering. This is a systematic & comprehensive resource of selected and critically assessed data explained in their scientific context. SpringerMaterials covers the following areas:

* Particles, Nuclei and Atoms
* Molecules and Radicals
* Electronic Structure and Transport
* Magnetism
* Semiconductivity
* Superconductivity
* Crystallography
* Thermodynamics
* Multiphase Systems
* Advanced Materials
* Advanced Technologies
* Astro- and Geophysics

Both trial resources are available through MetaLib and through the links given, if you’re on campus.
