New resources at the USFP Library

Here are the latest arrivals for the month of May. As always, circulating books (including children’s) are located in the New Books shelves in the back of the room. Reference is shelved immediately in its proper stacks.

To note, we’ve continued receiving the 2010 award-winning, honor and notable Children’s books, including the Newbery award winner – When You Reach Me PZ7.S80857 Wh 2009.

Got a smart phone or an iPad? You can now access the mobile version of the USF catalog. And, you can check-in from the Library on Foursquare, the Twitter-related location app.

How to perform legal research

While USF Poly does not have a law school, it is sometimes necessary to perform legal research. It can be a complex field though but thankfully, there are resources to help.

The USFP Library has some books, like classic Wren and Wren’s The Legal Research Manual: A Game Plan for Legal Research and Analysis and e-book Legal research how to find & understand the law by Elias and Levinkind.

We also have access to the Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe and Westlaw Campus databases (don’t forget to go through Blackboard to authenticate first.)

Finally, there are excellent free sources of information on the Web:

Catalog for hand-held device

The USF Libraries catalog is now available on your hand-held device or smart phone.

Use this link on your device: http://catalog.fcla.edu/. It will take to a common catalog of all the libraries in the Florida university system. You can search all the catalogs or specify USF. The search box works the same way as the basic search functions in the regular catalog. You can check your account and renew your books too!

NetLibrary having difficulties

Network issues are currently affecting use of e-book collection NetLibrary. NetLibrary is aware and working on correcting the problem. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

New databases in Business: International Directory of Company Histories; Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies; Market Share Reporter; SRDS Media Solutions

Four significant online resources with a Business focus have recently been added to the online collection of the USF Libraries. For each title, access is now online only. Funding for these resources comes in part from USF Sarasota-Manatee.

International Directory of Company Histories

The International Directory of Company Histories provides detailed information on the development of any of the world’s 4,550 largest and most influential companies. Entries provide information on founders, expansions and losses, labor/management actions, NAIC codes, key dates, ticker symbol, principal subsidiaries, principal divisions, principal operating units, principle competitors and other significant milestones – complete with statistics, dates and names of key players. Vols. 1-6 are organized alphabetically by major industries; Vol. 7 and subsequent volumes are arranged alphabetically by company name within each volume. Each volume includes a cumulative index to companies and personal names. Vol. 7 and subsequent volumes include a cumulative index to industries. Starting with Volume 37 a geographical index to companies sorted by country of head office. USF purchased the online volumes from v.1- v.58 and then v. 105 to the present.

Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies

This resource provides current company and industry profiles for over 100,000 U.S. companies, 90 percent of which are private. The database can be searched by company name, ticker symbol, zip code, city or state, SIC or NAICS codes, assets, employee count, officers, and other variables. Results can be sorted by financial data, geography, employees, etc. Ward’s Business Directory is part of the Gale Directory Library. It may be searched as a single source or in a cross-search with other directories.

Market Share Reporter

Part of Gale’s Directory Library collection, the publication provides comparative business statistics (arranged by 4-digit SIC code) for companies, products and services. With over 3,600 individual entries, queries can be built using descriptors such as: NAICS code, subject heading, and title. All entries also include source information. Search results can be displayed by title, publication date, and geography. Saved searches can be downloaded in HTML format.

SRDS Media Solutions

SRDS Online provides access to electronic versions of the following SRDS print publications:

  • Business Media Advertising: Provides comprehensive, multi-platform planning information on domestic and healthcare trade media. Media are classified into more than 190 markets, with more than 30,000 updates every year.
  • Consumer Media Advertising Source: Provides complete planning information on U.S. and international consumer magazines. This database contains standardized ad rates, dates, contact information, and links to online media kits, Web sites, and audit statements that provide additional facts on readership information and positioning.
  • Direct Marketing List Source: This source provides an index and search fuctions that focus on e-mail lists. Using DMLS, researchers can locate consumer and business-to-business e-mail lists in 212 market classifications. Information covered includes complete list rental information, sources, selects, costs and other information useful for direct marketing campaigns.
  • Newspaper Advertising Source: Provides complete planning information on daily ethnic, college, and international newspapers and newspaper-distributed magazines and newspaper groups. This database contains standardized ad rates, dates, contact information, and links to online media kits and Web sites that provide additional facts on readership information and positioning.
  • Radio Advertising Source: Provides complete planning information on AM/FM commercial radio stations in the U.S. This database contains format detail, demographics, and contact information.
  • TV & Cable Source: Provides information on broadcast, cable, syndicated, and alternative television advertising opportunities in the U.S. Over 3,400 listings identify commercial and noncommercial stations, broadcast networks, multiple station owners, cable systems, interconnects, cable networks, MSOs, syndicators, and sales reps. A separate section covers Latin American ad outlets.
  • Local Market Audience has a market profile section that characterizes demographic and lifestyle proclivities of Designated Market Areas (DMA) and counties; a lifestyle analyst section that cross tabulates interests and behaviors, ranking them within DMAs; and demographic reports that illuminate interests and behaviors with reference to age, income, marital status and life stages.

Check in at the USFP Library on foursquare

There are a lot of places that you visit during the day, including the USFP Library. What if you used your mobile phone to record all those places? And then were given points for them? Would that be a fun game? That’s exactly what the web game foursquare is about!

Play along with your fellow students to see what places are of interest, called venues, in the Central Florida area and check in. When you’ll visit the Library venue, you’ll see that we are starting to put together a list of things to do while here. You can add some yourself too.

The more you check in, the more points you get. Check in enough times and become mayor of that location. Who will be the first Mayor of the USFP Library?

Digital video cameras available for checkout

The USF Poly Library has now on reserves three easy to use digital video cameras. Check out period is 3 days. We also have tripods if needed. Ask for them at the front desk.

More book giveaways

We have free books for the taking in the Group Study area, in boxes near the New Books shelves. You are welcome to take as many as you wish. Topics range from education, criminal justice and psychology to nursing.

These books, coming from donations processed recently, are not needed for the Library’s collections. Keep a eye out, more titles will be available in the coming days.
