New database: World News Connection

World News Connection is an online news service that provides translated and English-language news and information from an extensive array of providers. It is particularly effective in its coverage of local media sources, allowing a researcher to determine what is happening on the ground in a specific country or region.

Compiled from thousands of non-U.S. media sources, the information from World News Connection covers significant socio-economic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events. The material in this resource is provided to the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) by the Open Source Center (OSC), a U.S. government agency. For over 60 years, analysts from domestic and overseas bureaus have monitored timely and pertinent open-source materials, including gray literature. The information is obtained from full text and summaries of newspaper articles, conference proceedings, television and radio broadcasts, periodicals, and non-classified technical reports. Information is entered into World News Connection on the hour, every day and is available within 24-72 hours from the time of original publication or broadcast. Most of the articles included in World News Connection are in full-text format. Some are excerpted and are noted as such.

World News Connection was acquired by USF Sarasota-Manatee on behalf of the USF Libraries.

New e-books collections – Springer

The USF Libraries have recently purchased three Springer e-book collections with close to 2,000 titles. These ebooks are available 24/7 with an unlimited number of users. All titles are fully searchable. The Springer ebooks are fully integrated with the Springer Online Journals for convenience. All collections include publications from 2005-2008. Library closed due to tropical storm Fay

The USF Polytechnic will be closed tomorrow Tuesday, August 19th due to tropical storm Fay. Therefore, the Library and Open Use Lab will be closed as well. We will know Tuesday if the campus will open Wednesday.

The bookshelves have been wrapped this afternoon as a preventative measure but the books will remain available if need be, until closing time at 5:00PM.

UPDATE: The Library reopened Wednesday, August 20th.

Service outage

Sunday morning , August 17th, starting at 6:00am and ending by 6:30am, Information Technology will be upgrading the software on the two backbone routers in the SVC Data Center. For the Libraries, it means that web and EZProxy access will be affected.

NetLibrary update

NetLibrary is the USF Libraries’ largest collection of online books from various publishers. While USF has not purchased the entire NetLibrary collection, the USF collection numbers over 60,000 titles with a focus on scholarly publications with some general interest titles included. Over 54% of the titles are from university presses such as Oxford, MIT, and SUNY. Publishers with substantial content include Wiley, Springer, and Taylor & Francis. The USF instance of NetLibrary
also features online audio books of popular fiction and the Pimsleur Language Program. NetLibrary also contains a searchable collection of electronic books in the public domain including titles digitized by Yale University Press.

USF’s current NetLibrary collection was developed through the collection development efforts of librarians from noted southeastern research libraries The USF Libraries have recently added the latest collection of titles selected by this group, NetLibrary VII. Additionally, the USF Libraries acquired close to 200 NetLibrary titles in support of our Association of Research Libraries (ARL) initiative in the areas of Karst, Mental Health, and Genocide.

All available titles are now cataloged and appear in our local catalog and will also be included in WorldCat Local.

Beta test what may be the next generation of library catalogs

The USF Libraries is testing a new catalog — WorldCat Local. This tool delivers search results from both USF Libraries collections and libraries around the world. More information is available by visiting the USF Libraries/WorldCat Local FAQ.

Your feedback is important in the development of this new search tool. Please give us your comments and suggestions through a short survey.

Please note that this is a beta implementation and that we are working with the WorldCat Local staff to resolve a series of known problems over the coming months (see the list below).

  • Links to electronic resources including ebooks and ejournals are inconsistent.
  • Holdings information is incomplete.
  • Connections to interlibrary loan services are pending.
  • Records for digital collections such as “18th Century Collections Online” are not yet included.
  • Ranking of search results for Center for Research Library records are unavailable.

Semester break hours

The USF Poly Library will be open during the following hours starting Saturday, August 9:

  • Saturdays: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Sundays: closed
  • Mondays to Fridays: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Regular opening hours will resume Monday, August 25 at 9:00 AM. To note the Open Use Computer Lab will follow the same hours.

New resources for the USFP Library

Here are the books newly arrived at the USF Polytechnic Library during the months of May, June and July. As always, new circulating books are found in the “New books” stacks in the Group Study area; the new reference books are being immediately shelved in the Reference stacks; the new DVDs are available on request at the front desk.

As you can see, the Summer semester is rather light on new arrivals but we have lots of good titles in the works that should come in soon. Happy August!

OpenOffice installed on Public Access machine

The OpenOffice suite has been installed on the Public Access machine. What is OpenOffice? It is a free, open source software suite containing a word processor, a spreadsheet editor, database software, presentation software, a picture editor and a graph editor. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. The interface is very similar to Office. You can learn more here.

In case you were wondering, we could not install the Office suite because of the licensing agreements. Viewers for Word, Excel and PowerPoint are otherwise installed. Printing is possible.
