Back from the SARC IV Conference

Last week I attended the 4th South Atlantic Regional Conference, organized by Special Libraries Association (SLA) chapters from the south-east.

I acted as Webmaster and IT Committee Chair/Facilitator for the Conference. I also presented a session, “Live Library Instruction for Distance Learners”, relating my experience using Elluminate to teach information literacy skills to USFL distance students.

The conference took place at the Hilton St. Petersburg Carillon Park, which did a remarquable job hosting us.

Absent from campus

I am away at a conference this week.

I will be leaving Monday February 25th at 2:00 PM and will be back Monday, March 3rd at 9:00 AM. I will have email access (clw@lakeland.usf.edu), though not all the time.

If you need immediate assistance from a librarian, you can contact the USF Tampa’s Ask-A-Librarian services at (813) 974-2729 or (866) 550-8036 (toll free).

Have a pleasant week!

New Database: SourceOECD

The USF Libraries have acquired the multidisciplinary database SourceOECD.

SourceOECD is an online library of statistical databases, books, and periodicals from OECD, the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development. The OECD, a membership of 30 countries, is one of the world’s largest publishers in the fields of economics and public policy. SourceOECD is comprised of over 1,800 online books with unrestricted access grouped in 24 themes, 24 periodicals, 3 reference titles, and 26 OECD statistical databases, all in full text. Themed groupings include: Education, Energy, Emerging Economies, Environment & Sustainable Development, Finance and Investment, Science, Social Issues, Urban and Regional Development, Transportation and more. Twenty-six statistical databases from the OECD are presented enabling users to download data and build their own tables, in real time. Users can also build cross-database tables. OECD has recently launched OECD.Stat that allows searches across the various OECD databases. It is now in a beta test until September 2008. The USF Libraries hold a subscription to all OECD online publications with the exception of the third-party IEA Statistics.

To access it, search MetaLib by using the “Search the Databases” link on the library’s main page.

Birthday cake

The USF Lakeland Library turned one on January 27th! Please join us to celebrate its birthday during the 3W event on February 20th, from 3:30 to 6:00PM on the lawn between LAC and LTB. We’ll have cake and other goodies.

New database in the Library

Business students and faculty will find the DataStream Advance database from Thomson on computer 1115-42 in the Group Study area of the Library.

Because of licensing conditions and the necessity for client software installation, this database is not available through MetaLib. The USF Lakeland has one seat for access. Because of this, priority for computer 1115-42 will be given to those wishing to use the database.

Here is a bit more information about the database:

Thomson Datastream is the most respected historical financial numerical database, covering an unparalleled breadth of financial instruments, equity and fixed-income securities and indicators for over 175 countries and 60 markets worldwide.
