After many successful years of operation, time and circumstances have led The Pierian Press, Inc. to discontinue production of their three databases, Consumers Index, FactSearch, and Media Review Digest. Unfortunately, this development affects three of our databases.

OCLC will continue to offer the databases via FirstSearch through June 30, 2007.

The data from the 2006 Journal Citation Reports is now available in the ISI Web of Knowledge database. This data gives information on how many times a journal was cited, how many it has cited other journals and it’s impact factor, among others.

This kind of information is interesting when you are choosing a journal to submit an article, or when you are collecting additional information for a tenure and/or promotion dossier.

You can access the Journal Citation Reports in the Web of Knowledge database. Go to MetaLib, search the database by name and click on the resulting link. In the database itself, at the very top, you will see a drop-down menu. You will see the option for the Reports. If you are from off campus, don’t forget to log into the network first.

Submissions are now accepted for the 2nd Annual Florida Book Awards, a program established in 2006 that recognizes, honors, and celebrates the best Florida literature published the previous year.

Authors who have residency in Florida may submit works of fiction or poetry that have a publication date between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. Non-fiction works on a Florida topic published in 2007 may be submitted by any author. (…) Submissions are accepted in the following seven categories: General Fiction, Florida Nonfiction, Spanish Language Book, Poetry, Young Adult Literature, Children’s Literature, and Popular Fiction.

The Library has a new OPS staff person with Jo Averill-Snell. Jo is now working on Saturday and Monday evening. She gained library experience at the University of Tampa and St. Pete College libraries. She will start her Masters in Library and Information Science at USF in the Fall. Welcome Jo!

I myself just came back from the Annual Conference of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in Denver, CO. I moderated one session, “Podcasting the Librarian Way”, and filled my functions as Secretary of the Science-Technology Division and Membership/Awards Committee Chair of the Information Technology Division. I also helped man an information booth for the 4th South Atlantic Regional Conference that will take place in St. Petersburg next winter.

We received many items in May. As always, new books from the circulating collection and the Children’s books collection are located in the “New Books” shelves in the Group Study room. On Thursday, May 24th, USF Lakeland will hold an event for Alumni and VIPs from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The event will include tours of the LTB building, including LTB 1115, home of the Library and Open Use Computer Lab. These will be brief tours and LTB 1115 will remain open throughout.

On Monday, May 28th, the USFL Library will be closed for Memorial Day. To note, the Open Use Lab will be closed as well.

Coming later this summer is a new interface to the USF Libraries catalog. The Libraries have purchased ProFind by Endeca, a product that will permit guided, faceted navigation through our catalog. So the basis will remain the same but the users will enjoy a new interface that will make identifying and resources easier. As soon as results show on the screen, users will be able to filter them by location or format for example, or will be able to choose additional topics to refine the search.

You can try out a beta right now. Go to our catalog and then click on the link at the top left that says “Try our new catalog (beta)”. I would be happy to know your opinion of this new interface.

Circulating books and Children’s books are shelved on the New Books stack, in the Group Study area.
