New database
To commemorate the British Royal Society‘s 350th anniversary in 2010, the Society made public today an interactive website called Trailblazing, giving access to 60 original manuscripts of papers published in its journals during its history.
Among the highlights from the Trailblazing site are: a 1770 scientific study confirming that composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a genius and, more recently, acclaimed British scientist Stephen Hawking’s early writings on black holes. Also included are Sir Isaac Newton’s landmark research on light and colour, a gruesome account of a 17th century blood transfusion and Benjamin Franklin’s famous kite-flying experiment to identify the electrical nature of lightning in 1752.
The Royal Society hopes that the new interactive site will inspire members of the public to see science as part of everyday life and culture. According to Royal Society president Lord Martin Rees, the scientific papers on Trailblazing represent a ceaseless quest by scientists over the centuries, many of them Fellows of the Royal Society, to test and build on the knowledge of humankind and the universe. Happy Thanksgiving to all our users – we are grateful for your support!
Announcing Credo Reference as a new a multidisciplinary collection of online reference resources. Funded by USF Sarasota/Manatee, the content in Credo is selected by USF librarians.
Credo Reference provides access to one hundred reference resources, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and biographical sources chosen to meet a broad range of research needs. Metasearching allows the user to search across all content in the current collection. Each title has an information title page with a description, and a search box for the individual title, so searching can be done at a more precise level. Concept maps are available, as are “gadgets” offering quick look ups for definitions, locations, conversions, quotations and people. Results can be exported into RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager. Users can also email the abstract or the full-text, save to a file or clipboard, or choose to print. Citation styles offered are APA, MLA, Harvard and Chicago.

As our Children’s Books collection expanded, the stack where they reside was getting too crowded. We reshelved the last part of the collection (mainly fairytales and nonfiction/science books) on the back of that stack, thus the need to around the corner to find them.
As always, don’t hesitate to ask if you can’t find what you are looking for.
In observance of Veterans’ Day, the USF Polytechnic Library and the Open Use Lab will be closed on Wednesday, November 11th.
LTB 1115 will reopen on Thursday, the 12th at 8:00 AM.
Informaworld will not be available Tuesday, November 10th, from midnight to 5:00 a.m.
We use the Informaworld database to access the full-text of articles from scientific publishers like Taylor & Francis and Routledge.
We are currently experiencing difficulties with our NetLibrary e-book collection. We are seeing a copyright message appear every 4-5 pages and we are getting reports that users are getting bumped out of NetLibrary with the message: “This eContent is not included in your library’s collection and is unavailable for viewing.”
To fix the copyright message issues, NetLibrary has scheduled a fix for which they have to bring down all of their servers on Friday, November 6th, to make the fix. They are also working on the other problem.
NetLibrary is the USF Libraries’ biggest e-book collection.
