New e-resource: LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection

Announcing one of the latest acquisitions of the USF Libraries—the purchase of the LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection.

“What do oil executives, intelligence, the Pearl Harbor attacks, and baseball have in common? All are topics discussed in congressional hearings. Hearings are often the most requested of all government documents in a library as they have real-life stories, statistics, expert testimony, and the drama of the interrogation all rolled into a single document. Hearings give researchers the ability to discover to whom Congress is listening, who the players were in an issue, and how they positioned themselves in the debate.
Through hearings, researchers can study what a pediatrician in the Love Canal area said when responding to questions from Senator Albert Gore, Jr., about health hazards related to the dumping of hazardous waste there. More is written on hearings than on other areas of congressional publications” (Sevetson).

The LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection is a compilation of published and unpublished Congressional hearings from 1824-2003 that forms a documentary record of events and public policy faced by the United States. Published hearings are the official record of committee hearings proceedings that are printed by the Government Printing Office (GPO) and include the diverse information presented at committee hearings. Unpublished hearings in the digital collection include historical primary documents from both Senate and House committees from the period between (1823-1976). Other content in the Digital Collection includes: transcripts of sessions between the committee and witnesses, other written and oral statements of witnesses, special reports, exhibits, statistical reports, and other materials submitted for the record by witnesses. The Congressional Hearings Digital Collection can be searched by terms such as: title, keyword, subject, committee name, or Superintendant of Documents number. Search results are displayed in full text format and include both print and email functions. Provides a useful “Help Toolbox” that assists the user in properly citing hearings, provides practice scenarios, outlines the legislative process, and supplies information that serves as a backdrop to hearings within the framework of the U.S. government. This resource supports both undergraduate and graduate studies.

The LexisNexis Congressional Hearings Digital Collection contains 119,200 titles and 24.69 million pages. Over 106,000 MARC records for this collection have been loaded in the library catalog with approximately 5,000 more to load, when they become available.

RefShare Added to RefWorks

RefShare provides RefWorks users with an easy way to share RefWorks citations for those at USF and beyond to any researcher with internet access. RefWorks is the citation management system accessible freely to the USF community.

RefShare supports cross-institutional collaboration, the posting of reading lists by our faculty, and projects within a defined community of users. Features of RefShare include the creation of an open URL for the folder, emailing of the folder, allowing users to post comments and the ability to see use statistics within the user’s account to see how many times a bibliography has been viewed.

For those with RefWorks accounts, click on Folders/Share Folders to check out RefShare.

Changes in interlibrary loan process for books

The USF Polytechnic Library is changing the way it’s processing interlibrary loans for books. Interlibrary loan is a collaborative process between libraries of all types, to give access to items not owned locally. This is a service reserved to USF registered students, staff and faculty.

Starting this week, we are now accepting requests for books from the USF Libraries system, or outside USF, using the same ILLiad interface that is currently used for articles (http://guides.lib.usf.edu/ill). This is a web-based interface, so you won’t need to use our old PDF form anymore.

ILLiad does requires a login and password. If you already had an account (to request journal articles), your existing account will continue working just the same. You will simply see added the option of requesting books.

If you don’t already have an ILLiad account, you will need to create one. Go to http://guides.lib.usf.edu/ill and click on “Not registered”, under the login box.

Important:

  • We strongly recommend you use your NetID as login and password. This Fall, all ILLiad accounts will be moved to the NetID
  • You will be asked for a d a Delivery Location, choose “USF Polytechnic”

Processing time should be less than a week from time of reception, within the USF system. Outside USF, please consider a wait time of two weeks or more, as we then depend on the loaning library. As always, in the majority of cases, the ILL service is offered free to you. We do ask that you limit your requests to 20 a week. Please be as complete and accurate as possible: the more information you put in your request, the faster we will be able to process it. Include the ISBN number, especially if requesting a specific edition; the OCLC number is also extremely helpful.

We are working on the Library webpages to update the ILL information, relevant to Polytechnic.

If you have any questions about the new process, on how to use ILLiad, or on how to find the ISBN/OCLC numbers, please contact Library Specialist Amy VanMiddlesworth at avanmiddlesworth@poly.usf.edu or 7-7747.
