New database: Global Road Warrior

Announcing the recent acquisition of an online resource, Global Road Warrior, that supports international business, travel and more.

Global Road Warrior is a resource from World Trade Press, a publisher that focuses on international trade, business relations, and business travel. The intent of Global Road Warrior is to foster international commerce and understanding by serving as practical and comprehensive reference tool. Taking a country by country approach, researchers can drill down to an array of content that ranges from content that can be easily found elsewhere such as facts about the country, climate, and geography to content that is uniquely contained within this resource. This unique content includes business etiquette in a country; stereotypes of the country as accepted by foreigners and stereotypes as accepted by the country; information specific to women on the “global road”; information on street crime, organized crime, and social unrest; typical food within the country; religious practices; language; lifecycles; and much more. While an invaluable tool for international business and marketing, this resource could prove useful in sociology, anthropology, women’s studies and more.

New database: Projekt Dyabola

Responding to requests by the USF History Department, the USF Libraries have acquired three databases within Projekt Dyabola, a resource in support of Classical History and more.

Projekt Dyabola indexes works in the fields of Classical Archaeology, Etruscology, Minoan Archaeology and Prehistory, Byzantine Art History, Numismatics, and Classical History. Within Projekt Dyabola, USF subscribes to Archäologische Bibliographie, 1956-2005 and the Supplements. This resource indexes books, articles and reviews in these fields, as found in periodicals, congress reports, and exhibition and museum catalogs.

Archäologische Bibliographie records the current acquisitions of the German Archaeological Institute, the most comprehensive library devoted to classical studies, the École Française de Rome, the British School at Rome, the American Academy in Rome and of the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueologia en Roma. Approximately 2000 to 2500 new titles are added per month and made available every four to five weeks. The database contains about 1,000,000 subject headings; 420,000 citations of 77,000 authors; and citations to 143,400 monographs. The interface of this resource is available in German, English, Italian, and French.

SFX down for maintenance

Maintenance work will make that the SFX menu may not display Sunday morning, November 9th, between 7 am and 10 am Eastern time.

SFX is the open link resolver the USF Libraries use to give you easy access to full text article journals.

New online tutorials

The Poly Library just published two online tutorials: the first is an introduction to the library and its services and resources; the second explains briefly how to search articles and access the full-text.

These tutorials can be found under the “Research Help” item on the Library’s website, at http://poly.usf.edu/Offices/Library/Research_Help/Tutorials.xml. Of course, the library staff remains available for any further assistance so don’t hesitate to ask.

We will be preparing other online tutorials. If there is a topic you would like to see under that format, please let us know at clw@poly.usf.edu.

New resources at the USF Poly Library

Here are the items newly arrived at the USF Polytechnic Library during the month of October. As always, new circulating books are found in the “New books” stacks in the Group Study area; the new reference and special collections books as well as new A/V are being immediately shelved in their respective stacks.

Please remember that you can find more information on these books, like the table of contents or their current availability, by searching for the titles in the USF Libraries catalog.

To note, we received a copy of own Dr Alfredo Weitzenfeld’s book, Ingeniería de software orientada a objetos con UML, Java e Internet, for our USFP Faculty Publications Special Collection.

Transfer Day at USF Poly

Today is Transfer Day at USF Poly. The Library will be present at the event for any questions our potential new students may have about services and resources.

November 3rd, 4:30PM to 6:30PM, in the Lakeland Technology Building, room LTB 1104/05.

Research Day at USF Poly

The USFP Library is participating this afternoon in the campus’ Research Day. We’ll have some of our latest books on research methods on display and will present the Library’s services and resources for researchers.

Research Day is in room LTB 1100 from 1PM to 5PM. Faculty and students will be presenting posters on their research endeavors.

Internet access disruptions possible

From USF’s Information Technology department:

The Internet service provider Sprint has depeered USF’s Internet service provider Cogent as of around 6PM October 30th. Because of this any single-homed Sprint customer will be unable to reach USF and vice versa. Many of you may remember this happened between Level3 and Cogent a few years ago and was caused by what Level3 considered unfair levels of traffic exchange between themselves and Cogent. Apparently a similar problem has surfaced between Sprint and Cogent.

For the library resources, this may mean that

1. A user off campus who has Sprint in his/her network path (with no other path around Sprint) will not be able to get to USF at all (either our website or EZProxy, or Blackboard).

2. Users either on or off campus attempting to access an electronic resource provided by a vendor who has Sprint in its network path (with no other route around Sprint) will not be able to get to that resource (remember that off campus users have to go through USF’s network via EZProxy/Blackboard to get to most eresources).

There is no practical alternative that we can offer those stricken by this situation at this time except to invite them to visit the Library for access. We’ll try to keep you posted as the situation progresses.

EDUCAUSE presentation

Associate Librarian Catherine Lavallée-Welch is back from attending the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference in Orlando. EDUCAUSE is a professional association focusing on technology in higher education.

Lavallée-Welch attended a pre-conference seminar on Learning Commons. She also presented with USF Poly colleagues Dr Naomi Boyer, Kevin Calkins and Karen Konrath a session entitled Sustainable Faculty Technology Development to Facilitate a New University Culture.
