Issues with ProQuest databases

The USF Libraries has reported a known problem to ProQuest regarding their menus. Two issues exist. When using the drop down box for a database selection, the selected database is dropped off. The second problem is that intermittently after selecting a database, one is then prompted for user name and password. The user name of IPAUTO is already filled in and it looks like a password must be supplied. ProQuest will report back to us when a fix is in place.

Hollywood Librarian

The USF Lakeland Library is proud to present The Hollywood Librarian: A look at librarians on film during Banned Books Week in October. This is the first movie on the subject of the real lives and actual work of U.S. librarians. Using the entertaining and appealing context of American movies, the film will hold some surprises for people who may think they know what librarians do. Instead of a commercial release, the film is distributed to libraries to bring attention to Banned Books Week and the issues of censorship, freedom to read and the work of libraries and librarians.

Two showings: Tuesday, October 2nd at 6:15Pm and Friday, October 5th at 1:15 PM. Location: LTB Auditorium (LTB 1100).

Tickets:
Tickets are on sale at the USF Cashier’s Office (LTB 1135).
The Office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Ticket sales on October 2nd for paying audience will stop promptly at 6:00 PM.

Drop-in seminars on Database Searching and RefWorks

This fall, we will hold four open, drop-in seminars on library resources:

    • Monday, September 24, 12:00-1:00 PM, LAC 1170A
    • Monday, October 22, 5:00-6:00 PM, LAC 1170A
  • Database Searching – Learn to select and access the best databases for your subject, search their content and find full-text articles
    • Monday, September 17, 5:00-6:00 PM, LAC 11170A
    • Monday, October 22, 12:00-1:00 PM, LAC 1170A

These seminars all open to all; no registration required.

Please do not reshelve

We kindly ask our users to not reshelve books or journals you have browsed or used inside the library. You can leave them on the return book cart (near the public access machine), on the tables or flat on a shelf.

We keep track on what is being used in-house, for statistics and assessment purposes. If the item is reshelved, we don’t know it has been used. Also, we want to avoid reshelving errors. A lot of time can be spent looking for a book that is not where it’s supposed to be when needed.

Thank you for your cooperation.

MetaLib update

Along with our catalog, MetaLib and SFX, our databases/fulltext tools, have also been updated by FCLA. Enhancements within these tools will be implemented to improve discovery and use of online resources.

  • With the Quick Search feature in MetaLib, you will see a “clustering” of results by topic and by author, date, and journal. Search results will be relevancy ranked and automatically merged to detect duplicate entries.
  • The newest version of MetaLib will now comply with the W3C Web Content Accessibility Level A, making MetaLib more accessible to our sight impaired.
  • The latest version of SFX will include the useful Citation Linker feature, allowing a search for a citation by title, author, ISSN, or any number of search fields.
  • MetaLib will display updates on new resources and known issues with databases, keeping you current on what has been recently added and providing you with the information you need to work in an increasingly complex and dynamic environment.

New hours of operation for Fall 2007

Starting August 27th, the Library will have new hours of operation:

  • Monday – Thursday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

The Computer Open Use Lab will have the same hours. These changes are due to budget cuts mandated by the State of Florida.

Catalog maintenance – done!

The updating of the library system is now completed. Patron empowerment features in the catalog are available again (account viewing, holds and online renewal).

And check out the new catalog interface! It will now be easier to see the availability of materials and filter results by location, author, format or topic.

Catalog maintenance

The USF Libraries catalog system will be undergoing a conversion
Friday, August 16, 2007 at 6:00pm through Monday, August 20, 2007 at 11:00am

The library catalog, with its new look, will still be available, however library patrons will not have access to Renew Materials or Recall/Place Holds.
