Voter registration

You will find voter registration forms on the Library’s front desk (and pens!). At this point in time, it is too late to register to vote in Lakeland’s or Auburndale’s elections on November 6th but you can certainly prepare for the federal elections in ’08.

New interface for Ovid

OvidSP, an upcoming release of a new precision search and discovery platform, will be live and accessible on Thursday, October 25, 2007. USF offers different databases through OVID like MEDLINE and PsychINFO.

Additions and enhancements include:

  • Support of free text, natural language searching
  • Simultaneous searching across all databases, journals, and books
  • Results ranked by relevancy.
  • Multiple search modes: Basic, Find Citation, Subject Search, Search Fields, or SilverPlatter “Classic,” which employs traditional SilverPlatter syntax
  • Improved research workflow tools, search transparency and other features to narrow or broaden your search
  • Improved Alerting tools such as RSS feeds and electronic Table of Contents

To try the new interface, go to MEDLINE or PsychINFO using MetaLib. Once you have accessed the search interface, look for the “Try OVIDSP” link at the top of the screen in the middle.

New APA rules about electronic resources citation style

The APA just released new rules about the citation of electronic documents with Digital Object Identifier (DOI) numbers. You can find details on the APA website at http://www.apastyle.org/elecmedia.html as well as on the University of Maryland University College Library’s website at http://www.umuc.edu/library/guides/apa.shtml#DOI.

But, students, before you apply these new rules, check with your instructor first.

New database for African Studies

The African Studies Companion is an annotated guide to print and electronic information sources in the field of African Studies. As in many other disciplines, there is now growing information overload on Africa and African studies. This makes the need for critical evaluation all the more important. Annotations in the African Studies Companion are evaluative rather than purely descriptive. This fully searchable electronic edition is regularly updated to provide maximum currency. The majority of listings identify primarily general, multidisciplinary sources of information, primarily those in English and relating to sub-Saharan Africa. One can search or browse all sections of the African Studies Companion individually. Sections include reference works, indexing and abstracting services, biographical sources, cartographic and GIS sources, the African press, journals and magazines, libraries and archives, a guide to using Google for African studies research and more.

EDITED! Change in log in information – effective 10/10/07

***The change in PIN number has been moved a week in the future, at least. We will keep you updated***

When logging into the USF Libraries website using your Library ID, the required log in information is changing. Effective Wednesday, October 10, 2007, library patrons will no longer be required to enter the last four digits of their social security number in addition to their Library ID. Rather, the month and date of birth will be required (MMDD – 2 digit month and 2 digit date. For example, July 9th would need to be entered 0709.)

This change in log in will also effect the renewal of books through the library catalog.

Some minor changes have been made to MetaLib: font issues with the “I” button and the Quick Search databases have been fixed. The “Locate” tab has been renamed as well; it now reads “Vendor”.

Banned Books Week

For the first time, from September 29th to October 6th, the USF Lakeland Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week with other libraries across the country. From the American Libraries Association’s website:

Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. (…) BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.

The USFL Library will have handouts, posters and documentation on banned books set out during the week. And, of course, the Library will host two showings of The Hollywood Librarian, on October 2nd and October 5th. This is a great documentary film and everyone can attend. Meanwhile, enjoy your freedom to read!
